Totterdown, a vibrant and eclectic neighbourhood made famous by its rows of colourful homes and a community spirit like no other.

Living in Totterdown, Bristol

Home to what is apparently the steepest hill in the UK, Totterdown makes no apologies for its inclines, and it’s easy to see why. Thriving local businesses, colourful Victorian terraces and a strong sense of community all make for very comfortable living in this vibrant corner of Bristol.

Just a short stroll from Temple Meads station and the city centre, Totterdown manages to feel both connected and quietly tucked away. The independent spirit runs through the neighbourhood, with artisan bakeries, coffee shops and pubs dotted between tree-lined streets and pocket parks. Weekend mornings often mean grabbing a coffee on Wells Road and wandering over to Victoria Park.

We asked Helen Ward, a local artist, interior designer, and Totterdown champion, to show us around her neighbourhood.

Local Area

Originally built in the mid to late nineteenth century to house workers for the nearby railway industry, Totterdown has grown into one of Bristol's most characterful and well-loved neighbourhoods. Today it offers a great mix of green spaces, independent businesses and easy access to the city centre - all wrapped up in those unmistakable colourful streets.

About Boardwalk Property

Totterdown offers a distinctive mix of Victorian and Edwardian terraces, modern conversions and newer developments close to Temple Meads. Many homes sit on elevated streets, meaning unexpected views and great natural light are part of day-to-day living. Character features are common – think bay windows, original floorboards and colourful facades – giving properties here a strong sense of personality and charm.

The market in Totterdown moves with steady demand. Homes close to Victoria Park or near the cafés and local shops along Wells Road tend to be especially popular, attracting buyers who want easy access to the city without losing the neighbourhood feel. Whether you’re upsizing, downsizing or searching for your first step onto the ladder, Totterdown offers a variety of property options that appeal to a wide range of buyers.

As local experts, we understand the nuances of the area – from which streets catch the best light to where you’ll get more space or renovation potential. Talking to local experts early gives you a clearer sense of value and helps you move with confidence when the right property comes to market.
