Contextual Design
Mark Wray emphasises the importance of understanding the site's history in the design process. The project in rural Wiltshire, surrounded by breathtaking countryside views, pays homage to its agricultural past. The main volume, a two-story dry stack stone Barn, echoes the site's historic use for agriculture.
Capturing Views and Elements
Picture windows in the lounge and snug spaces frame the landscape, while the double-height dining room focuses on the sky and changing weather. The house strategically looks in four directions, each wing capturing a different aspect of the garden and surrounding views.
Natural and Local Materials
Mark Wray Architects prioritises the use of natural and local materials, such as Dry Stack Cotswold Stone and natural slate roofs. The dry stone wall seamlessly extends into the main house, connecting the structure to its surroundings and ensuring a comfortable fit in the location.
