The Humble Stripe, Reimagined: Dressing Your Home with Studio Humbug
“It’s just amazing to be part of something that is someone’s life, - something where you’re shaping memories in that environment I think is really special”
At the end of a decade of working in fashion, Katie Cary was looking for a new creative venture to nurture her artistic skills whilst giving her more time with her young family. Drawn to pattern and colour, and having worked with textiles throughout her career, it felt natural to translate that experience into interior design. And so Studio Humbug was born, a fabric and wallpaper studio celebrating the humble stripe and elevating it for the modern home.
Each pattern is hand-painted by Katie, inspired by the natural landscape that surrounds her countryside home and from observing the changing of the seasons. The slow, craft-based nature of the process makes each design all the more unique. Looking closely at each pattern you can see where her brushstrokes have met the page or where the colour of a turning leaf has left its mark on her vision.
Elements like colour are something Katie considers carefully, always coming back to nature's combinations to keep things grounded and remaining rooted in the timelessness of the stripe. As Katie puts it,
'With interiors, it's a space that you're living in, and so you don't want it to feel like the whole thing's just been pulled together yesterday, you want it to feel like it's sort of organically evolved.'
Katie's designs truly embody her statement. As you slowly curate your home, adding pieces and personality in the process, you want to know that when you look around in 10 years' time, you'll still love every pattern and fabric you chose today. They have that sense of novelty and individuality, yet somehow feel as though they've always belonged in the space, to be enjoyed for many years to come.
